Platform bed frames also sit low to the ground, making bed-skirts unnecessary because it allows children to climb up with ease. In this guide, you will know if platform beds necessarily need box springs.
What are Platform Beds?
Platform beds consist of a mattress and a frame that is elevated slightly. Usually, it is rectangular and or can contain some space for extra storage underneath. Any type of mattress is compatible with a platform bed, although solid platforms are usually required to satisfy the warranty criteria for memory foam mattresses.
A platform bed is an alternative bed frame with a supportive surface in the form of a reliable, raised platform or slats that the mattress directly rests upon. Platform beds are often sold without headboards and footboards, making it easy to customize any bed that accommodates attachment hardware. So, do platform beds need box springs?
What is a Box Spring?
Box springs are usually made of wooden frames lined with a few heavy-duty coiled springs. The springs help to absorb the everyday wear and tear of your mattress and also works to make the bed more comfortable when you’re sleeping. A box spring can prevent a mattress from sagging as well.
Box springs are naturally lightweight but are very sturdy. They provide a layer of cushioning between the mattress and the floor. It leads to less damage to both the bed and the flooring underneath. Its primary purpose is to absorb the impact transmitted through mattresses from rough handling and use.
Do You Need a Box Spring with Your Platform Bed?
Do platform beds need box springs? Because of the advancement in furniture designs, you probably do not need a box spring for a platform bed. Any mattress is placed directly on a platform bed frame, eliminating the need for a box spring due to the updated, supportive design of platform beds.
Memory foam mattresses, which are denser, can also be used on a platform bed frame and are also durable. However, if the frame has slats, it is recommended that they be no more than 6 inches apart if you’re using a memory foam mattress.
Can You Choose to Use a Box Spring on Your Platform Bed?
If you have a mattress that already has this foundation or will purchase one with your new mattress, you may wonder if you can use a box spring with a platform bed. The answer to this is yes. As the platform, you can provide excellent support for anything you place upon it, but you may want to have a few considerations before putting it into use.
The use of a box foundation with a platform will raise the bed profile. In many cases, this may be desirable, especially since a platform bed often has a low profile, and maybe too low for comfort. But since platform beds are made to work without the need for any other type of support, they were created to address the needs of mattresses that cannot use a box spring.
Advantages of Box Spring Beds
Traditional box spring beds are easily identified by their height, which is a look preferred by other people. Since they are a bit higher off the ground, they can also be used for sitting. But why do platform beds need box springs?
Box springs prevent the mattress from sagging, and it supports it properly by dispersing body weight evenly across the foundation. Box springs add support and absorb body weight, which in turn makes your mattress last for long. The artful and functional qualities of a traditional box spring are more appealing to certain people than the simplified modern look of the usual platforms. Box springs also provide a softer sleeping surface compared to platforms.
Disadvantages of Box Spring Beds
Box spring beds require more costs, including the box spring, mattress, frame, rails, headboard, and footboard. Box springs also tend to lose their support over time; that is why they are turned regularly for some maintenance. If the springs weaken, the mattress can sag and form some soft spots. Box springs take up almost all the space underneath the bed, leaving very little space for storage.
So, do platform beds need box springs? Using a box spring with your platform bed frame is an entirely personal choice as long as you have a mattress that can support one. You can also invest in a board to take advantage of what a box foundation offers, adding height and support.
Box spring is often the bounciest option, but this also heavily relies on your mattress. Innerspring beddings are the bounciest and delightful to have. However, no matter what type of mattress you have, you do not need to use anything else with your platform bed.
